The Electoral Commission (EC) has decided to rerun the parliamentary election in 19 out of the 37 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency. The decision stems from the fact that the scanned results used for collation in these 19 stations, although approved by both parties' agents, were not verified by the responsible Presiding Officers.
The rerun election is scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025. The commission has assured of full security by the Ghana Police Service.
In a statement signed by the Deputy Chairman of Operations, Samuel Tettey, it explained that the EC met with representatives from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Tuesday, July 1st, 2025, to address the ongoing dispute regarding the Ablekuma North Constituency Parliamentary Election. This meeting followed an earlier one on June 12th, 2025.
Central issue
The central issue revolves around the use of scanned Pink Sheets from 37 polling stations for the collation of results. It's worth noting that supporters of the political parties destroyed several original Pink Sheets during the collation process following the December 7th General Election.
During the meeting, both parties reiterated their previous positions. The NDC is calling for a rerun of the election in thirty-seven polling stations, stressing that scanned copies of the Pink Sheets were used to collate the results. The NPP,on the other hand, wants the results from three outstanding polling stations to be collated, as they claim the NDC agents verified the scanned results.
NPP rejects EC's decision
Meanwhile the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has voiced strong opposition to EC's decision to rerun elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, July 3, 2025, the General Secretary of the party, Justin Kodua Frimpong stated the party's complete rejection of the EC's move, labeling it as shocking, disingenuous, and unlawful.
NPP stance
The NPP's stance stems from the EC's announcement to rerun the elections, citing that results from the 19 polling stations, though approved by party agents, were not verified by presiding officers.
The party insists that the EC must adhere to the High Court's order to complete the constituency collation, as mandated on January 4, 2025.
The court directed the EC to finalise the collation of the remaining results, with the Inspector General of Police providing security.
Acknowledgement
The NPP highlighted that the EC had previously acknowledged only three outstanding polling stations requiring collation.
The party further argued that the EC's sudden change of course regarding the 19 polling stations lacks legal basis and is an attempt to deviate from the court's directive.
The NPP therefore called on the EC to proceed with the completion of the collation exercise as per the High Court's order.
