Over one hundred shops have been destroyed in a fire outbreak at the Kantamanto market in Accra.

Traders are still counting their losses running into hundreds of thousand Ghana cedis.

The fire started at about 1am on Thursday morning.

An Assistant Divisional Fire Officer at the Public Relations Department of the Ghana National Fire Service, Mr Alex King Nartey, told AGTV News that the cause of the fire is still under investigation and that although the inferno has been brought under control the fire fighters are still around to make sure that the fire is completely extinguished.

When asked how long it will take to identify the cause of the fire outbreak, Mr Nartey observed that it can take between one week and two months depending on how fast the service get access to vital information.

Eyewitnesses account

According to eyewitnesses, the fire broke out suddenly, catching many off guard. Some of the residents in the area said they were asleep when they heard people shouting only for them to see that fire had engulfed the market.

History

Fire outbreaks at the Katamanto market have been recorded on December 16, 2020 and November 29, 2022.
